Vice Chancellor for Research Penny Gordon-Larsen spoke to Dr. Ahalt about how UNC Research will capitalize on the new School of Data Science and Society.

Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz spoke to Dr. Ahalt about his excitement for the new School of Data Science and Society and how its impact will benefit the futures of UNC students.

Isma Gilani presented “EduHeLx – HeLx for Education,” which provided an overview of the use of HeLx, a scalable computing platform developed by RENCI for students to address the need of scalable and robust cyberinfrastructure in the cloud.  

Kira Bradford spoke on efforts from the “Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL)” Data Stewardship Group to provide solutions for managing and coordinating the diverse data across the HEAL Initiative.

Todd BenDor discussed “Open Science & Data Management at the Odum Institute,” and presented on the UNC Dataverse and how it supports the Odum Institute’s values of open science and FAIR Principles.

Snigdha Chaturvedi discussed “Data Storytelling through Natural Language Generation,” and presented projects that implement natural language processing (NLP) to convert computer data to human text. Using NLP, human text can be generated through text, graph, or a table.  

Danielle Szafir presented “Making Data Visible: Cognitively-Driven Data Visualization @ The VisuaLab,” which provided an overview of projects at The VisuaLab, comprised of researchers working to make data analysis more efficient by studying, understanding, and predicting how people will work … Read more

David Gotz spoke on various efforts from the “The Visual Analytics and Communication Lab,” which conducts research at the intersection of interactive visualization, human-computer interaction, and machine learning.

Nabarun Dasgupta presented two projects from the Opioid Data Lab: an algorithm to predict out-of-hospital death using insurance claims data and an initiative to understand and communicate the content inside street drugs.
